An employee of one of the Italian offices can count himself incredibly lucky. A peaceful mushroom-picking trip almost ended in tragedy. While the 33-year-old was collecting mushrooms in the forest near Lake Garda, he was attacked by a bear. The perilous encounter occurred on Saturday, 19th October, around 9 PM Greenwich Mean Time.
The animal struck the Italian mushroom picker, leaving numerous claw marks on his back and arms. The man was utterly unprepared for a bear attack and had no time to respond.
I never thought a bear could attack me. When I felt something hit me from behind, I assumed someone was pushing me and trying to start a fight, said the municipal office employee who was attacked by the wild animal to the Italian media.
Bear attacked in Italy: Man manages to escape
The "Alto Adige" service reports that the man's injuries were not severe, and he was left more frightened than harmed. The bear attack victim managed to call for help on his own. Rescuers who arrived at the scene transported him to hospital for routine checks.
Importantly, local authorities note that the attack occurred very close to residential areas. The bear pounced on the 33-year-old just a few minutes' walk from the centres of Marazzone, Cavaione, and Rango.
What will happen to the bear? The aggressive animal will be identified using DNA traces and then destroyed. Authorities stress that individuals exhibiting high levels of aggression must be eliminated to ensure the safety of the local community.
