Barbie hits £1 billion: Will Gerwig's sequel soon follow?
"Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, has led a pink revolution across the globe, joining the elite billion-dollar club - a group of films that have achieved monumental box office success in recent years. What lies ahead? Could a sequel be in the works?
"Barbie" premiered on 12 July 2023, coinciding with the release of "Oppenheimer." The simultaneous debut of these vastly different yet highly anticipated films created a significant buzz in the entertainment industry. This phenomenon drew even the sceptics to cinemas, eager to witness the spectacle everyone was discussing. "Barbie" excelled, outperforming its competition. Greta Gerwig's film amassed a total of £1.19 billion worldwide (approximately £670 million outside the US).
"Barbie" encore: is a sequel on the cards?
Greta Gerwig was questioned about a potential sequel immediately following the film's premiere. While the director has not closed the door on the idea, she remains cautious. After all, it's challenging to dismiss the prospect of a sequel when the film has grossed £1 billion in such a short time, isn't it? "My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story? If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more," Gerwig remarked.
According to the "Hollywood Reporter," both Greta Gerwig and her partner, director Noah Baumbach, who co-wrote "Barbie," have uncovered a story they wish to unfold through "Barbie 2." Reports indicate that the project has already been proposed to Warner Bros. While there is an idea, no official announcement has been made as the studio remains reticent. The "Hollywood Reporter" remains optimistic, noting that Baumbach and Gerwig are known for their swift and efficient work, meaning audiences might not have to wait long for "Barbie 2."
Additionally, Greta Gerwig is currently venturing back into another much-loved narrative. Audiences will soon return to "The Chronicles of Narnia"! "I haven't even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I'm properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I'm scared, it's always a good sign," the director recently shared.
