Americans doubt benefits of Trump tariffs, survey reveals
Many Americans do not believe that imposing tariffs on foreign products will benefit the US economy. Nearly half of those surveyed think that actions taken by Donald Trump could actually harm the American economy.
The Marquette poll was conducted on 5 February with a sample of 1,063 people. The question was straightforward: Do tariffs help or hurt the American economy?
46 percent of respondents answered "hurt." 24 percent said they "help." 13 percent of those surveyed expressed no opinion on the matter.
Donald Trump imposes tariffs
Donald Trump threatened that new 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico would take effect at the beginning of February. However, the implementation was postponed by a month.
The new date for the tariffs to take effect is 4 March. The reason given for imposing them is accusations of insufficient border control by both countries and the influx of illegal immigration and fentanyl.
Contrary to initial threats, Trump does not plan to impose tariffs on China at this time. Even before taking office, he announced that he would impose a 10 percent tariff on all products from China simultaneously with tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
Trump also announced plans to impose tariffs on the European Union.
