A household hack to banish kettle limescale for good

Limescale in the kettle is caused by hard water—a common issue in many regions. This water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. When heated, these elements precipitate and settle at the bottom of the kettle. While not harmful to health, they certainly affect the taste of hot beverages and can shorten the lifespan of the appliance.

Tackling limescale in a kettle doesn't always require special chemical agents. Instead, it's worth using inexpensive kitchen products. Knowing how to prevent limescale deposits in the kettle is also beneficial.

Natural methods to descale a kettle

Vinegar is one of the oldest and most popular home remedies. Simply pour about 250 millilitres of vinegar into the kettle, fill it up with water, boil it, and leave it for an hour. After rinsing the kettle, you can enjoy its cleanliness.

Another well-known method is using citric acid. Pour cold water into the bottom of the kettle (in hot water, calcium citrate, which is difficult to remove, would precipitate) and add three teaspoons. After 20 minutes, you can rinse the kettle and enjoy its cleanliness.

How to prevent limescale buildup?

How can you keep your kettle clean and limescale-free? A clever and lesser-known trick is to put a kitchen scrubber inside. The limescale will settle on it. However, remember to rinse it regularly under the tap and replace it with a new one from time to time. Descaling the kettle will no longer be an unpleasant chore.
