Yaupon tea: America's forgotten brew returns with a boost

For a long time, it was forgotten, but now it's making a comeback. Both Native Americans and early American settlers treated it as a medicinal infusion. In flavour, it resembles a mix of both black and green tea. It possesses numerous nutritional benefits and can be considered an alternative to coffee.

Although the infusion from this plant was known hundreds of years ago, it fell into obscurity. Only recently have people decided to resume its cultivation. Yaupon is a species of evergreen holly native to the southeastern regions of North America.

Known for hundreds of years

For thousands of years, Native Americans and colonists used yaupon to prepare medicinal infusions. The leaves and stems of this plant were brewed, and the infusion was most often consumed during various rituals. However, it wasn't known at that time that excessive consumption could be harmful and cause vomiting.

These properties are now appreciated

The properties of Yaupon infusion have been thoroughly studied today. It contains caffeine, which stimulates and boosts energy. It also contains theobromine, which positively affects brain function. These components also promote better concentration and improve mood. It is rich in powerful antioxidants; this is its main advantage. Such an infusion can help prevent inflammation and may be beneficial in preventing many diseases, including cancers, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. It also helps prevent the rapid ageing of the body. Yaupon tea positively affects intestinal function and improves metabolism and digestion. The tea also aids in preventing indigestion.

It's important! The most crucial components of Yaupon tea are its antioxidants and caffeine.

When to drink yaupon

Yaupon tea is best consumed in the morning as it enhances memory and concentration. This infusion also helps with digestive issues, such as constipation or bloating. What are the contraindications? People sensitive to caffeine should exercise caution. This ingredient links Yaupon to coffee.
