Wisconsin judge orders release of slender man stabbing convict
Morgan Geyser, who in 2014 attempted to kill a friend to impress an Internet character, will be released from a psychiatric hospital. Judge Michael Bohren made this decision after reviewing psychologists' opinions.
The character had become an inspiration for films and video games. He was the one 12-year-old Morgan Geyser sought to impress.
To achieve this, at just 12 years old, she attacked her friend Peyton Leutner with a knife. She is now being released from a psychiatric hospital after 11 years of treatment.
The decision was made by Judge Michael Bohren from Wisconsin, based on the evaluations of three psychologists who confirmed Geyser’s progress.
Judge Bohren decided to release Geyser after considering psychologists' assessments. Dr Brooke Lundbohm stated that Geyser had ceased taking antidepressants and showed no symptoms that posed a threat to society.
Dr Lundbohm also emphasised that Geyser regrets her actions. Following her release, she will be supervised for 60 days in a specialised group home.
In 2014, Geyser and Anissa Weier lured Leutner into the woods, where Geyser stabbed her 19 times. The motive behind the attack was to impress the fictional character Slender Man. Leutner survived, thanks to a passer-by.
The crime ignited an international conversation about the impact of fictional characters on children’s psychological well-being. Both girls were sentenced to stay in a psychiatric hospital, and the global community is now contemplating significant regulations to protect young people from internet-related dangers.
