Winter travel tips: Keep your ski boots close and book early

Winter trips can generate stress related to various factors, such as packing and transporting sports equipment. Adam Roy, CEO of The Volla, a company offering accommodation rentals, shares a few tips for travellers going on winter ski trips.

Packing for winter holidays can be challenging, especially when it involves large items such as skis, snowboards, and boots. These items not only take up a lot of space but can also significantly increase travel costs.

It's better to keep ski boots with you

Adam Roy's most important advice is to avoid checking in ski boots with your luggage.

- I'd recommend not putting your boots in the hold and keeping them with you instead. If bags are delayed or lost, you can always hire a new board or skis but getting a new pair of boots is a huge hassle – explains the expert in an interview with express.co.uk.

Replacement boots, whether bought or rented, will not fit as well as your own. However, note that some airlines may not allow carrying a boot bag onboard, so it's best to pack them into a small suitcase that meets carry-on size requirements.

The standard cabin luggage dimensions depend on the carrier, but most airlines allow bags up to 56 x 40 x 20 centimetres. Budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air may have more stringent restrictions, while premium carriers tend to be more flexible.

It's better to travel off-season

To save even more on winter holidays, consider travelling off-peak season. Individuals without children and with flexible schedules can take advantage of the cheapest dates, usually between February and April. January also offers attractive prices and excellent snow conditions. It's wise to check the dates of school winter breaks and Easter to avoid crowds and higher prices.

Roy also advises choosing higher-altitude resorts, where the season starts earlier and lasts longer.

Book your trip in advance and get insured

To make the most of a winter trip, Adam recommends booking necessary services in advance. - I'd encourage people to book restaurant reservations and buy lift passes in advance to avoid disappointment – he advises.

If you're planning skiing lessons, consider afternoon sessions. - Group sessions are always cheaper too, and a great way to boost your confidence – adds Roy, emphasising the financial and social benefits of learning in a group.

Don't skimp on travel insurance – proper coverage can protect you from unforeseen expenses on a winter trip. The expert stresses that purchasing insurance is a "must."

He warns against choosing the cheapest offers, especially when planning holidays with winter sports, even if you're on a budget. Most standard policies do not cover potential accidents on the slopes. Roy explains that comprehensive ski insurance should include protection against damage, theft, or loss of personal or rented equipment, as well as loss of ski passes.
