The expert warns that underwear, especially synthetic, hinders airflow, increases temperature, and thus fosters the growth of pathogens, especially in women who are prone to this. It's especially worth remembering this during sleep.

Some like to sleep in warm pyjamas, others are staunch advocates of sleeping naked. Many women choose nightgowns, to which they add knickers. It turns out there is no clear answer as to whether it's better to wear underwear at night or not, but in some cases, going without may be beneficial for health.

Sleeping with or without knickers?

Experts do not provide a clear answer on which option is better for health: sleeping in underwear or without. It all depends on personal preference and, for example, health status. Some lean more towards the latter option, especially if a woman is prone to intimate infections and irritations.

Bacteria and yeast multiply more easily in dark and moist places, so if you wear underwear and tight trousers all day, it might be worth considering taking them off at night to allow intimate areas free access to air.

If, however, we can't imagine sleeping without knickers or we are on our period, it's advisable to choose underwear made from natural, breathable materials, such as silk or cotton. Synthetic materials, like polyester, can result in serious health issues.

Gynaecologist advises: let's sleep without underwear

Gynaecologist Barbara Karyta has a clear view on this matter. In a conversation with Medonet, she appealed to women to avoid tight clothing altogether and choose underwear made from natural fabrics. "Breathable material will ensure that the intimate areas remain dry, preventing overheating and sweating," she emphasized.

She also recommended more freedom at night, suggesting sleeping without underwear.

"Why? Underwear, especially synthetic, restricts airflow, increases temperature, and thus promotes the growth of pathogens, especially in women prone to this," she added.
