Many cat owners wonder why their pets are eager to fall asleep on them. We now know whether this is a positive sign.

The cat, alongside the dog, is one of the most popular domestic animals. If we take care of our pet and spend enough time with it, it will become our four-legged friend.

It has long been known that animals try to convey something to us through many behaviours — it is no different with cats. What could it mean when we catch the animal sleeping on our back or stomach?

The proximity of a cat and the sense of security

Every cat guardian knows that these animals love the company of people. The fact that the cat falls asleep on you indicates its sense of security and trust. Cats, despite being predators, often seek out the safest place to sleep in the house. They often choose their guardians. If your cat sleeps on you, building a bond can be considered a success.

Cats can sleep up to 16 hours a day and choose various places to rest. They often choose their guardian's lap, stomach, or legs. When a cat chooses to sleep on a person, it means it feels comfortable and safe, which reflects its satisfaction with its relationship with the owner.

Why do cats sleep on their owners?

Cats, as predators, remain constantly ready to protect themselves, and when they choose to sleep, they look for a place that will provide them with peace and security. Often, guardians become such a refuge for them. Cats can disconnect from their predator instincts by sleeping close to us and simply rest without worries.

The habit of falling asleep on a caretaker can be compared to the relationship with the mother in the early stages of a kitten's life when the young fall asleep close to the mother, feeling the safest. Adult cats find similar security with humans, which is a testament to a strong bond. Interestingly, much can also depend on where exactly the animal falls asleep:

  1. The cat falls asleep on your stomach: the pet feels safe and wants to be close to its two-legged friend.
  2. The cat sleeps on your head: the head is comfortable for the animal because we move it the least during sleep. If the cat lies close to our eyes during rest, it also seeks to communicate with "its person."
  3. The cat sleeps at the feet or on the knees: it is believed that when a cat lies in this spot, it sends a signal that it needs a bit more affection and attention from us.
