WHO calls on China for data to trace Covid-19 origins
The WHO demands information from the Chinese about the origins of the pandemic that began five years ago in Wuhan. "This is a moral and scientific imperative," wrote the World Health Organization in a statement.
The COVID-19 pandemic began five years ago. The virus has claimed over seven million lives and has overwhelmed healthcare systems globally.
The WHO reminds us that on 31 December 2019, the organisation's country office in China received a media statement from authorities in Wuhan regarding cases of "viral pneumonia" in the city. However, the Chinese have not yet provided their data on the origins of the pandemic.
"Without transparency, sharing, and co-operation among countries, the world cannot adequately prevent and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics," WHO urges.
The statement reads that WHO wants to "honour the lives changed and lost, recognize those who are suffering from Covid-19 and long Covid, express gratitude to the health workers who sacrificed so much to care for us, and commit to learning from Covid-19 to build a healthier tomorrow."
