Waffle season beckons: A delightful blend of tradition and innovation
Official waffle season is about to start. Many of us will enjoy them during the long May weekends by the sea or in the mountains. They taste great on walks. Staying home? Nothing is lost. You can bake delicious waffles yourself.
Waffles are a favourite dessert on trips. They are often associated with seaside resorts and, recently, with tales of horror. Will this be the case during this year's May holidays? Those staying at home can prepare delicious waffles much cheaper. Not just kids will be thrilled.
Good ideas
The waffle batter is simple to prepare and somewhat similar to the one for the pancakes. They should be crispy on the outside and soft and delicate on the inside. Of course, the effect is greatly influenced by a good waffle maker, but the batter plays a significant role, too. I've tried several approaches. Great waffles come out when you use melted butter instead of oil. If you like a fruity flavour, sugar can be replaced with a blended banana. This dessert is also more delicate when milk is replaced with yoghurt or buttermilk. Plant-based drinks, especially almond milk, work well too.
Whipped cream and strawberries also go well with waffles with a spicy flavour. In that case, add cocoa and cinnamon to the batter. There are many ideas for waffles. It's worth experimenting and preparing them differently each time. We have a whole season of fresh fruits ahead and thus waffles. It's the best duo!
Recipe for classic waffles
Ingredients:
- 450g of all-purpose flour,
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder,
- a pinch of salt,
- 2 teaspoons of sugar, preferably powdered,
- vanilla sugar to taste,
- 2 eggs,
- 120ml of vegetable oil or melted butter,
- 315ml of milk,
- cinnamon and cocoa optionally.
How to prepare:
- Pour flour into a bowl, and add baking powder, salt, sugar, vanilla sugar, and spices if making a spiced version. Mix everything together, then add eggs, oil, and milk.
- Blend with a mixer until smooth. Heat the waffle maker. Scoop the batter with a ladle and cook for a few minutes (according to the waffle maker's instructions).
- Serve waffles with your favourite toppings. Fresh strawberries and blueberries are perfect, but you can also use good jams, honey, chocolate sauce, maple syrup, or powdered sugar in the simplest version.
