Virtual AI gowns stir chaos at Met Gala

The Met Gala is an event where stars worldwide appear in bold fashions yearly. This time, however, only photographs witnessed the presence of two of them. And it was all due to AI.

The Met Gala, formerly known as the Costume Institute Gala, is an annual charity ball held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It kicks off the annual exhibition of the Costume Institute, which operates within the museum. The event is famous for the extravagant outfits worn by celebrities, fashion designers, and influential people from various industries, making it one of the key events in the global fashion world.

The Met Gala has a different theme every year, reflecting the exhibition's topic. Participants are encouraged to interpret this theme in their outfits. Gala revenues are the primary source of funding for the Costume Institute.

This year's edition, however, brought unexpected changes by introducing digital chaos into the fashion world through artificial intelligence.

Katy Perry and Rihanna in stunning gowns that turned out to be fakes

According to information from sources such as Tech Crunch, a photo of Katy Perry in a spectacular gown adorned with flowers quickly gained popularity online, generating millions of views. However, it turned out that the picture was fake. This was indicated by the colour of the carpets - in the photos, they were red and beige, not green and white, which are the official colours of the Met Gala.

Similarly, a photo of Rihanna in a garden gown also turned out to be fake. Despite promising to come and change her hair colour to pink, the singer did not arrive at the event. Although both creations were the result of AI work, they nonetheless attracted considerable attention.

Creations made by AI still can't match the real ones

The latest Met Gala showed that in the era of advanced generative tools based on artificial intelligence, fans of the celebrity world must continually verify the authenticity of what they watch online. The example of Zendaya, who appeared in two outfits during one gala, proves that reality can be as surprising as virtual creations.

These events showed that the development of AI technology changes how we perceive the world of fashion and celebrities and makes us reflect on issues of creativity and uniqueness in an era when digital tools are widely available. As Tech Crunch highlights, although virtual creations are impressive, they cannot compete with the innovation and expressiveness of the real outfits presented at the Met Gala over the years.
