The Vatican expressed concern on Sunday and labelled the attempt on Donald Trump's life in Pennsylvania as an "episode of violence." However, the statement given to journalists did not directly reference the former US president.

In response to requests for comment on the events in Pennsylvania, the Vatican press expresses "concern about last night's episode of violence, which wounds people and democracy, causing suffering and death."

It added that the Vatican "united in the prayer of the U.S. bishops for America, for the victims, and for peace in the country, so that the motives of the violent may never prevail."

Pope Francis did not mention the events in the USA during Sunday's midday prayer meeting with the faithful.

Attempted assassination of Donald Trump

Former US President Donald Trump was injured during a Saturday election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump fell to the ground during his speech, holding his head, after which he was escorted to his car by the Secret Service.

The former president fell to the ground, holding the side of his head. Trump stood up on his own, waved his fist toward the crowd, and was escorted to the car by Secret Service agents. Blood was visible on his head.
