Valencia high-rise blaze engulfs surrounding buildings, casualties unknown

The fire ignited in one of the 14-story blocks in the Campanar district of Valencia and rapidly engulfed nearby structures.

More than 20 fire brigade units rushed to tackle the inferno. Residents from the surrounding area were advised to keep away from the site of the fire.

The number of casualties remains unknown. Local media suggest it's possible there were people inside the building at the time.

A resident of the second floor conveyed to 'La Sexta' how fast the flames escalated following the outbreak. - The fire spread within 10 minutes, he said.

A woman told TVE that she saw firefighters attempting to rescue a teenage boy trapped on the first floor of the building. Other accounts mention a family who was saved from a balcony. - Only the building's skeleton is left, a man reported.

Field hospital is operational on site

The fire department received the call around 4:30 PM Greenwich Time. TVE reported the establishment of a field hospital nearby, prepared for potential victims.

"I would like to express my support for all the victims and my appreciation for all the rescuers on the scene," posted Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, on social media. He confirmed that he has contacted the president and local authorities regarding the matter to ensure necessary assistance is provided.
