US‑Russia dialogue in Istanbul: A step towards diplomacy
The talks between the US and Russian delegations in Istanbul, which lasted over six hours, have concluded. The meeting focused on rebuilding diplomatic relations.
As reported by Reuters, citing Russian media, no media briefings were held following the conclusion of the meeting.
Rebuilding diplomatic relations
On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department confirmed that the talks would not include discussions on the war in Ukraine. A spokesperson emphasized that political and security issues were not part of the agenda and that Ukraine would not be a subject of discussion. The meeting was exclusively focused on restoring diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that both sides will work to restore the full functionality of diplomatic missions in both capitals, which currently operate on a limited basis.
The talks in Istanbul were another step towards normalising diplomatic relations between the US and Russia. The size of diplomatic missions in Washington and Moscow has been significantly reduced, complicating communication between the two countries.
