US citizen jailed in Russia for cursing at police during search
A United States citizen was sentenced to 10 days of imprisonment after using profanities in the presence of police officers in Russia. He was charged after the officers arrived at his home to search.
On Tuesday, the Russian news agency Tass reported that US citizen Angelo Joseph Talarico IV was detained for 10 days. He is accused of swearing at the officers who came to search his home as part of an investigation into an alleged theft. Talarico denies these accusations.
"Newsweek" emailed the White House and the Russian Foreign Ministry to request more information and comment on the matter.
It is currently only known that the 30-year-old moved to Moscow from Los Angeles. He was present in his wife's apartment in the Russian capital when a search was conducted as part of an investigation related to the theft of bitcoins in the Murmansk region.
The American started shouting at them loudly in English, while the agents often and clearly heard two words, the meaning of which was clear to them - the media emphasize.
Problems for Americans in Russia
The incident is the aftermath of a series of cases in which Americans have been detained in Russia in recent months. Tension between both countries is rising as the United States continues to provide assistance to Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since the invasion of the latter in February 2022.
The news of Talarico's arrest comes just a week after the detention in Russia of an American soldier, Sgt. Gordon Black, during a visit to his girlfriend.
The American has been charged with theft. Russia has also been holding "Wall Street Journal" reporter Evan Gerschkovitz since March 2023, who is allegedly accused of espionage.
