Photos and videos from the Netherlands are astonishing. The storm that passed over the northern part of the country on Monday was accompanied by heavy rain and hail. The worst-hit area was northern Friesland, where numerous floods occurred, and rain and hail entered buildings through the drainage system.

According to radar measurements, up to 10 centimetres of water could have fallen in an hour at the peak of the storm.

Town cut off from the world

The most challenging situation occurred in Buitenpost, which was flooded to the extent that it was impossible to enter by car.

During the flood, the local church and several shops were heavily affected. Some patients from the care centre had to be evacuated. The hail filled the drainage system, coming up through the toilets inside buildings.

The mayor of Buitenpost reported that hail had been pouring out of the toilets, which had been very strange. According to the statement, if he hadn’t been there myself, he would never have believed it.

Storm warnings were also in effect in the Netherlands on Tuesday until late evening. In the central and western parts of the country, first-level warnings for storms and risk of flooding were issued.
