If you have a nutcracker at home, it's time to dig it out from the drawer in the autumn and start cracking. However, this is quite a time-consuming task that requires a lot of strength, and not everyone has the right equipment. You could put the nuts into a plastic bag and smash them with a mallet, but digging out the pieces from amongst little shell bits isn’t much fun either. Fortunately, a different trick helps you effortlessly handle a whole bag of walnuts.
Go for walnuts
Walnuts are very popular in our cuisine, not only because of their flavour but also because of their health benefits. They are a true treasure trove of nutrients. They contain, among other things, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. These ingredients support cardiovascular health, help maintain proper cholesterol levels, and support brain health.
Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support both heart and brain function. Regular consumption can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. In addition, they can improve memory and concentration, making them an ideal dietary component for older adults.
How to crack walnuts?
Walnuts and a nutcracker are an inseparable pair. Cracking walnuts requires a lot of patience, but you can make this task easier. Boiling them in salted water is a proven way to soften the hard shells. Just boil them for 30 minutes, and the walnuts will become softer and easier to crack, saving you considerable effort.
There’s no need to search for a nutcracker afterwards. After soaking and thoroughly drying the nuts, gently heat them in a dry pan. The heat will cause the shells to crack, making it easier to extract the best part.
How to use walnut shells?
Walnut shells often end up in the rubbish, but it's worth knowing that they can be reused in various ways. Pour boiling water over the shells and let them sit for about an hour to achieve an intense colour. Then strain the infusion and rinse your hair thoroughly with it. For an even deeper hue, you can repeat the rinse. It’s a natural way to enhance the colour for brunettes and dark-haired individuals.
