If you dream of a fluffy, delicate, and juicily green grass carpet, the beginning of May is the best time for regenerative actions. After the stages of raking, scarification, and overseeding, it's time to fertilize your lawn with nutrients.

Activities such as raking, rolling, scarification, aeration, overseeding, and finally, fertilization should be performed right after winter to enjoy a lush, green, and soft turf. Today, we focus on the final lawn care, namely fertilization. When we start fertilizing, it is important to follow two precisely defined rules.

Want to enjoy thick grass? Don't miss this date

The first feeding with nutrients should take place after the first mowing of the grass, no later than May. Just as important as the date is the composition of the fertilizer used. You should opt for a product rich in nitrogen, available at any gardening store. Look for a product labelled as “spring fertilizer.” It is available in granules, powder, or liquid. Each form is effective.

Lawn fertilization should occur in early spring, summer, and early autumn to maintain a healthy-looking grass until the first snowfalls.

Before fertilizing, it is wise to loosen the soil, using, for example, a fork or rake. As for the amount of fertilizer, it is safest to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Exceeding the recommended dose can do more harm than good. Excess fertilizer can weaken the grass roots, and instead of a lush green colour, the turf may turn yellow and become dry.

Before applying fertilizer, it's also good to check the weather forecast. It's best to spread fertilizer on a cloudy day, just before rain. This allows the nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil and work faster, directly affecting the condition of the turf.

How to fertilize your lawn? Remember about biohumus

During periods between fertilization, consider offering additional nutrients to the soil with biohumus. It is a natural fertilizer obtained from substances processed by earthworms. Apply it before the arrival of the first hot days, as it will protect the grass from depletion.

For application, dilute biohumus with water at a 1:10 ratio, that is one part biohumus to ten parts water. Then, pour the solution into a watering can and water the lawn.
