Ukrainian strikes hit major Russian ammo depot near Voronezh
As a result of an operation conducted by the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, a large ammunition depot belonging to the Russian "West" group, located near the city of Ostrogorsk in the Voronezh region, was destroyed.
According to the Defence Express service, the attack on the depot occurred on 24 August, resulting in a detonation. The depot stored approximately 4,500 metric tonnes of ammunition, including artillery shells, tank rounds, anti-aircraft missiles, and small arms ammunition.
Increased demining activities and evacuation of civilians
Despite the official conclusion of the "active phase of detonation" on 25 August, the authorities of the Voronezh region reported that the detonation is still ongoing. Currently, demining activities are being conducted only in the vicinity of the depot and not directly on it. Other services will only begin their work after thoroughly examining the surrounding area, including the evacuated villages. Over 600 people have been evacuated, and the state of emergency in the region remains in effect.
Satellite images published by a journalist from the Radio Liberty project, Kyrylo Ovsyany, show that the ammunition depot was located in a forest between the villages of Novaya Melnitsa and Novaya Osinovka, about 90 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. The nearest residential building is about 600 metres away. This information sheds light on Russian activities' tactics and operational range in the region.
This is not the first such attack in this region. The previous one took place on 6 July, when on the night from Saturday to Sunday, Ukrainian drones attacked an ammunition depot in the region of Russian Voronezh.
