Ukraine's upgraded Su‑25s bolster firepower with French bombs
The first photos have emerged, confirming that Ukrainians have a new tool in their clashes with Russians. This involves Su-25 aircraft, which have been modernised to become carriers of French AASM Hammer bombs.
Ukrainian General Sergiy Holubtsov revealed in an interview in June that this type of modernisation was nearing completion. Until now, however, there has been a lack of further information, especially photographs. As reported by the Ukrainian service Defence Express, these have now been released.
AASM Hammer under the Su-25 aircraft
Ukrainian analysts suggest that the Su-25 modernisation likely mirrors the solution used for the MiG-29, the first Ukrainian aircraft adapted for AASM Hammer bombs. These conclusions are drawn from an analysis of the published photos. However, it remains unclear whether and how changes were made to the Su-25's onboard equipment to integrate it with the AASM Hammer (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range).
AASM Hammer assists in the fight against Russians
The Su-25 is frequently seen over Ukraine. It can reach a maximum speed of approximately 950 km/h. It is relatively small (measuring about 15 metres in length) but can carry armaments weighing over 4 tonnes. These are most often air-to-ground missiles, including Kh-23 and Kh-25M. The addition of the AASM Hammer significantly enhances its capability to eliminate enemy positions.
Conceptually, the AASM Hammer is similar to the American JDAM-ER modules mounted on traditional unguided bombs; however, the differences include interchangeable guidance heads and a rocket booster. The French solution was designed to integrate with standard Mk 82/83/84 bombs, weighing approximately 230, 450, and 910 kilograms, respectively.
Defence Express has highlighted that it is currently difficult to specify how many Su-25s have been adapted for the AASM Hammer. However, each machine provides a certain advantage over Russian Su-25s, which have not yet been adapted for modern guided weapons.
