Ukraine offers exemption to skilled workers amidst labour crisis
The Ukrainian economy, particularly the defence industry, is experiencing a shortage of highly skilled workers. Ukraine's Minister of National Unity, Oleksiy Chernyshov, announced that specialists who choose to return to Ukraine will not be conscripted into military service.
Chernyshov stated that Ukrainians who return can expect employment in defence industry plants. He stressed that these specialists are needed there "as much as air".
- We have a shortage of professionals, we have a shortage of specialists, and for most of them, Ukraine is prepared to exempt them from military service. That is why we plan to set up centres that will assist them in finding job opportunities - said Chernyshov.
He added that "these centres will provide services and encourage choosing a career path in Ukraine".
Ukraine and Russia have a similar problem. It is evident in one sector
Meanwhile, the Russian defence industry faces a nearly identical problem. Up to 400,000 workers are estimated to be absent from this sector.
The issue is so pressing that in November it was raised by the chairman of the Russian State Duma Control Committee. - According to some estimates, the shortage of specialists in the Russian defence industry in the near future will amount to about 400,000 people - said Oleg Morozov.
Forced mobilisation and the dispatch of hundreds of thousands of Russians to the front lines have caused other, less specialised industries also to encounter a shortage of personnel. For years, another significant issue in the Russian labour market has been the low birth rate.
