Both outlets have been keeping track of the military losses of Russia under the command of Putin for numerous months. The collaborated named list of deceased Russian military personnel already totals over 44,600. Nevertheless, it is underscored that the actual number of deaths is significantly higher.

This is the reason why Mediazona and the BBC, by utilising the named list of the deceased and the probate case registry, have determined the actual male mortality rate in Russia.

The findings suggest that by January 1, 2024, 75,000 Russian men below the age of 50 had perished in the war, not including the armies of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic and Donetsk People's Republic.

The authors of the study suggest that, according to their estimations, an average of 3,900 deaths per month have been recorded by the Russian army throughout the course of the war. With this assumption, the total number of fatalities among Putin's military personnel by February 2024 would be approximately 83,000.

Count of fallen Ukrainian soldiers

The exact number of Ukrainian soldiers who have died is uncertain. In August 2023, the New York Times referenced American officials who estimated the military losses of Ukraine to be around 70,000 deaths and between 100,000 to 200,000 injuries.
