In the programme "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin", Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian president, confirmed that it was Carlson who initiated the conversation.
"Indeed, he approached us directly. He proposed this interview. We thoroughly studied his materials and scrutinized his stance on several matters. After this review, we concluded that we would recommend to the president to provide such an interview. He quickly assented to this," said Peskov.
Peskov: Carlson is having a challenging time
Peskov said the interview has boosted Carlson's popularity, despite attracting substantial criticism.
"Given that the collective west is growing increasingly unpredictable, there were concerns that there might be some form of backlash for Carlson prior to the interview. Even now, as far as I understand, he is having a tough time," the Kremlin spokesperson explained.
Tucker Carlson, a former FOX News host, has been roundly critiqued for his stance on American aid to Ukraine. Additionally, he has explored conspiracy theories, including those concerning American laboratories in Ukraine. His speeches and comments have often been utilized by Russian television.
During the conversation with Putin, Carlson tried to suggest that Russia's invasion was a response to NATO's expansion. However, Putin did not wish to elaborate on this subject.
