Trump's triumph: End of NYC congestion tolls sparks debate
Donald Trump celebrates the decision to abolish tolls for entering the congestion pricing zone in New York. He announced this to the world via social media. Not only on his profile, but also on the official White House account, there appeared an image of Trump wearing a crown with the slogan: "Long Live the King."
"President Trump took a triumphant victory lap after his administration ordered New York to end congestion pricing on Wednesday," writes the "New York Post," commenting on the images that appeared online.
"Congestion pricing is dead. Manhattan, and all of New York, is saved. Long Live The King," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Moreover, a similar post was made on the White House account on the X platform.
Donald Trump attached to the post a mock-up of a "Time" magazine cover, which shows him wearing a crown with Manhattan in the background.
As the "New York Post" explains, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the decision on Wednesday, writing a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul, informing her that the administration will "terminate" the approval of the congestion pricing programme."
It is not yet known when the $9 (£7) toll will cease to apply.
Toll for entering Manhattan
New York introduced a groundbreaking solution in the American transportation system just over a month ago. Since 5th January, drivers have had to pay up to $9 (£7) to enter southern Manhattan. Authorities hoped to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
Interestingly, the latest studies indicate, however, that most residents of the Big Apple are getting used to the toll.
Chairman and CEO of the MTA Janno Lieber criticised the "baseless efforts," and the agency has filed a lawsuit to save the tolls for entering New York.
