Trump's promises tested: Skeptics urge more weapons for Ukraine
Volodymyr Petraniuk, the director of a theatre in Kyiv, believes that Donald Trump will not bring an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasises that the American president should provide more weapons to the Ukrainian armed forces. This, he suggests, is the only way to realistically influence the resolution of the conflict.
Donald Trump will assume the presidency of the United States on Monday (January 20). The Republican politician has pledged to end the war between Ukraine and Russia swiftly.
Ukrainians remain skeptical of Trump's promise and believe that a quick conflict resolution is unlikely. Even those who had hope for the new U.S. president claim that the only path to a rapid conclusion of the war is to supply Ukraine with a significant amount of weapons.
Volodymyr Petraniuk, director of the Mirror Theatre in Kyiv, expressed hope for ending the war under Donald Trump's leadership but doubted its likelihood, stating that the new president has little chance of achieving it. He added that increased support, such as more weapons and heavy equipment, could potentially enable them to defeat Putin's army and concluded with a wish for divine assistance.
The war between Russia and Ukraine will be one of Donald Trump's significant challenges as his term begins today. He will undoubtedly be held accountable for the public declarations he made during the election campaign.
I want everybody to stop dying. They’re dying. Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done in 24 hours - said Donald Trump in May 2023.
The Kremlin has already responded to the announcements, stating that there is no prospect of a quick end to the war unless Russian conditions (including the handover of eastern territories of Ukraine to Russia) are met. These terms are unacceptable to Ukraine and the coalition of Western countries.
