Trump's Paris visit: Royal protocol faux-pas with Prince William
On Saturday, Donald Trump met with Prince William in Paris. The U.S. President once again showed disregard for royal protocol. A video that encapsulates the moment has surfaced online.
Last month, presidential elections were held in the United States, with Donald Trump emerging victorious. The outcome sparked enormous emotions not only across the Atlantic but also in Poland.
Although the inauguration of the new U.S. President is yet to take place, Trump has chosen not to wait passively. Donald Trump is already meeting with fellow politicians and participating in a range of events of varying political nature.
Donald Trump at the inauguration of Notre-Dame Cathedral
On Saturday, the businessman attended the inauguration of the restored Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged by fire in 2019. The event was preceded by talks at the Élysée Palace, attended by Volodymyr Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron, and Trump. The ceremony subsequently took place with the attendance of Prince William.
Donald Trump's faux-pas at the meeting with Prince William
The media focused particularly on the private meeting between Trump and the royal, which occurred at the British ambassador's residence in Paris. The focus was on the American's conduct. The 78-year-old made a faux-pas by breaching royal protocol when greeting the Prince. A video captures the politician not only extending his hand first towards the royal but also patting him on the shoulder. Judging by William's unchanged expression and poise, he likely anticipated nothing different from the controversial American. It is important to note that both actions by the U.S. President are against royal etiquette. In interactions with royalty, one should await them to extend their hand first. Instigating unnecessary physical contact is also discouraged.
Donald Trump has previously breached royal protocol
It should be noted that this is not the first instance of Trump failing to conduct himself appropriately towards members of the British royal family. In 2018, he was tardy for a meeting with Queen Elizabeth, did not bow before her, and then walked ahead of her.
