"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Donald Trump said on the Truth Social platform, while simultaneously announcing the nomination of former Elon Musk associate, billionaire Ken Howery, as ambassador to Copenhagen.

Previously, Trump's idea was considered a joke

During his first term, Trump attempted to purchase Greenland, a move that was met with refusal from the authorities of Denmark and Greenland. This idea was considered a joke, although according to contemporary reports by the "Wall Street Journal," Trump returned to the topic several times "with varying levels of seriousness."

In Greenland, there is the Thule American Air Base, which was renamed in 2023 as a Space Force base. According to AP, Trump was not the first U.S. president to propose buying the world's largest island, as a similar offer was made in 1945 by President Harry Truman.

Ken Howery, the new candidate for U.S. ambassador to Denmark, is a former associate of Elon Musk and co-founder of PayPal. During Trump's first presidency, he served as the U.S. ambassador to Sweden. According to reports, he has been a friend of Musk's "for decades."
