Trump poised to reshape U.S. military aid strategy to Ukraine
Donald Trump is set to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth to discuss the situation in Ukraine, reports "The New York Times." During the discussions, a critical decision regarding military aid to Kyiv may be reached.
The US President plans to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth to deliberate on the situation in Ukraine. As reported by "The New York Times", there may be a "suspension or termination of American military aid" to Kyiv. This meeting is organised as a response to Sunday's gathering of European leaders in London.
The discussions will cover the recent delivery of ammunition and weaponry, overseen by Joe Biden's administration. Earlier, "The Washington Post" reported that the USA is considering halting the process of delivering weapons to Ukraine. The British Prime Minister expressed hope that despite tensions, the USA remains committed to restoring peace between Ukraine and Russia.
In his post on the Truth Social platform, Donald Trump suggested that the USA should "worry less about Putin and more about immigrant gangs and drug lords." "Otherwise, we'll end up like Europe," he concluded.
The British Prime Minister outlined points of the plan
At a press conference, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the meeting's aim was to unite partners around this initiative and efforts to "strengthen Ukraine and support a just and lasting peace for the good of us all." Starmer acknowledged that the key role now belongs to France and Great Britain regarding assistance and potential military presence in Ukraine.
"We agreed to continue providing military aid to Ukraine and applying economic pressure on Russia," said Starmer. He announced the allocation of approximately £1.5 billion for 5,000 anti-aircraft missiles for Ukraine.
Starmer also discussed key action points.
- Firstly, military aid will continue, and economic pressure on Russia will intensify to reinforce Ukraine’s position.
- Secondly, any long-term peace must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, ensuring its active participation in negotiations.
- Thirdly, even after a peace agreement, efforts will persist in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities to prevent future aggression.
- Fourthly, a coalition will be formed to uphold the agreement and maintain stability in Ukraine. While not all nations may contribute, those willing must take action now. The United Kingdom is prepared to provide tangible support, both on the ground and in the air, while Europe must commit to the necessary efforts.
