Trump hints at possible US aid for Ukraine's coastal recovery
The President of the USA, Donald Trump, does not rule out the possibility of assisting Ukraine in regaining some coastal areas occupied by Russia. This may include the city of Mariupol. "We're going to see if we can get it back," he told journalists.
After meeting with the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, US President Donald Trump was asked by a journalist about the Ukrainian territories that the USA wants Kyiv to reclaim.
"There were a lot of areas that were taken," Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office.
"Yeah, we've talked about it. A lot of the sea line has been taken, and we'll be talking about that. And we're going to see if we can get it back or get a lot of it back for Ukraine, if that's possible. We'll be seeing about that," he said.
How much of Ukraine's coastal areas has Russia taken over?
During the conflict, Russia has taken over a substantial part of Ukraine's coastal areas, particularly in the Donetsk region (including the notable city of Mariupol, which has been severely damaged due to the fighting), as well as in the Kherson region. Since 2014, Russians have also controlled Crimea, which belongs to Ukraine.
Russia also illegally annexed these territories through referendums in September 2022. The international community does not recognise this annexation.
