Republicans haven't won the majority of votes in the presidential race since 2004, when 62 million people voted for President George W. Bush.
For comparison, in 1984 Ronald Reagan (a Republican) received 54 million votes, which resulted in a landslide victory. The U.S. population was then approximately 100 million less than it is today.
On Monday, the AP agency reported that Donald Trump received 74.83 million popular votes. This broke his previous record from the 2020 election when he received 74.22 million votes.
In addition to the popular votes, Trump won in all seven key states, securing a victory in the Electoral College by a margin of 312 to 226 votes—this is the largest win since President Barack Obama's victory in 2012 when he achieved a result of 332 to 206 votes.
Record holder Joe Biden
As noted by the Insider Paper portal, President Joe Biden still holds the record for the most votes in U.S. history despite Donald Trump's recent success. In 2020, he received 81.3 million votes.
On 20 January 2025, the 78-year-old Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States.
Preparing for his second term in Washington, Trump is assembling his administration. On Saturday, he announced that he would not be reappointing former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The President-elect is scheduled to meet with Joe Biden at the White House this coming Wednesday.
