Tragic oversight: Hospital inquiry into double death case
Shirley Nuun received a devastating diagnosis: she was battling stage three lung cancer, and there was no hope for recovery. The hospital recommended palliative care but did not provide psychological support for her and her gravely ill son. Upon returning home, a family member sadly discovered both Shirley and her son deceased.
Shirley Nuun, a 67-year-old mother, was caring for her 50-year-old son Steven. Steven required constant care following a serious accident during his childhood, according to the "Daily Mail". At the age of 11, he had suffered a severe brain injury due to an accident, which led to permanent mobility issues and significant learning difficulties. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
In July 2021, Shirley received the news about her stage three lung cancer, and by August, she received a terminal diagnosis after the cancer spread to her brain, spine, and pelvis. She was discharged from the hospital with a plan for palliative care at home. Two days later, police, called by her sister, found her and her son deceased.
They died on the second anniversary of her husband's death, who had also battled cancer. The hospital has since initiated an inquiry into the matter.
The investigation report suggested that the tragedy might have stemmed from Shirley Nuun's concerns about her son's future after her death. The "Daily Mail" reported that experts highlighted the hospital's obligation to provide psychological support. It was noted that in September 2021, Shirley experienced suicidal thoughts, which subsided when she resumed antidepressant treatment. However, she reportedly showed signs of emotional instability.
It was advised that hospital staff should consider aspects beyond the time spent in the facility and assess risks such as domestic violence or the risk of suicide/murder, particularly when there is a dependency relationship between a carer and a dependent, especially in cases of terminal diagnoses, as highlighted by the "Daily Mail".
