Tragic end near Ensenada: Bodies found, believed to be missing tourists
In the area of the Baja California Peninsula, near the location where three foreign tourists went missing last weekend, three bodies have been discovered. The bodies were found in a difficult-to-access area, according to investigators.
The state attorney general has stated that all three bodies possess characteristics that strongly suggest they are those of the missing men.
"Three bodies were found south of the town of Ensenada and were recovered during a specialised operation since they were located in a difficult-to-access area," the investigators noted in a statement.
An autopsy and examination are expected to confirm their identities and establish the causes of death, the prosecution has informed.
The tourists went missing during vacation
Three men in their 30s - two brothers from Australia and an American - were on vacation near the popular tourist town of Ensenada in northwestern Mexico. They vanished a week ago. In connection with their disappearance, the Mexican police have detained and are currently questioning three individuals.
Baja California is considered one of Mexico's most violence-stricken states, largely because of the significant activity of drug cartels, even though Ensenada itself is deemed relatively safe.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, when asked about the disappearances and the discovery of the bodies, mentioned: "We are aware of these reports and are closely monitoring the situation." The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs stated that the Australian embassy in Mexico closely cooperates with Mexican authorities and the Australian Federal Police.
