Tragic collision in Minas Gerais claims 38 lives in Brazil
A tragic accident in which 38 people were killed occurred in the southeast of Brazil. A bus collided with a lorry, leading to a fire.
On Saturday, a tragic road accident occurred on the motorway near the city of Teófilo Otoni in the state of Minas Gerais. A bus carrying 45 passengers collided with a lorry, which caused a fire. Thirty-eight people were killed, including the bus driver and at least one child.
This is the most tragic road accident in Brazil since 2007. The bus was travelling from São Paulo to Vitória da Conquista. Thirteen passengers were rescued, but eight people are in critical condition in hospitals.
According to one version of events, a tyre burst on the bus, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Other witnesses claim that a granite block hit the bus. A car was also involved in the accident, but its passengers survived.
The Brazilian Ministry of Transport reports that more than 10,000 people have died in road accidents in Brazil this year. The accident in the state of Minas Gerais is one of the most tragic in recent years.
The President of Brazil addressed the tragedy on social media.
"I am deeply sorry and send my prayers to the families of the more than 30 victims of the accident in Teófilo Otoni in the state of Minas Gerais. I pray for the recovery of those who survived this terrible tragedy," commented President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
