Local authorities and media report at least 64 fatalities following severe floods in Spain. So far, the deaths of 62 people in the province of Valencia and two people in the region of Castilla-La Mancha have been confirmed, according to the EFE agency.

Floods in Spain. Streets like raging torrents

Following the storms, city streets turned into raging torrents, especially in the provinces of Valencia, Albacete, and Malaga. In Valencia, the floods paralysed transport: trains and buses were cancelled, the metro was closed, and many flights were redirected or cancelled. Residents of the town of Alora in the province of Malaga were left without drinking water due to damage to the water supply network after the Guadalhorce River overflowed its banks.

Social media featured recordings and photos showcasing the magnitude of the floods and the destruction they caused.

The published materials show flooded streets and car parks as well as overturned cars.

Some videos also capture the dramatic course of rescue operations for residents trapped in their homes.

Over 1,000 soldiers from special units for such tasks are involved in rescue operations. The Ministry of Defence decided to send additional units to the town of Letur in the province of Albacete, one of the hardest-hit areas, where one of the two victims in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha has been found so far.

According to meteorological services, the storms are expected to last until Thursday. On Wednesday, they are moving to the northeastern part of the country - Catalonia has declared a red weather alert, and floods have begun in Aragon.
