The tragic event unfolded in Casteldaccia near Palermo. Preliminary findings by the authorities suggest that the workers lost consciousness while working underground.

Investigators believe that the likely cause of death for the men was toxic gases released within the sewers.

This incident is yet another in a series of unfortunate events involving manual workers in Italy. For instance, in April, six workers perished at a hydroelectric power plant near Bologna.
