The secret weapon against rust: How a potato transforms cookware

Cleaning rust-covered baking trays or pans can be quite a challenge. Many of us reach for scourers, which help remove dirt but can also damage the delicate surface of cookware. However, a simple home remedy is both effective and safe — cleaning rust with a potato. The potato effectively removes rust and gently cleans surfaces without causing scratches. This simple trick will restore our baking trays and pans to their former glory without the need for chemicals or harsh tools.

Why is the potato effective in cleaning rust?

The potato contains oxalic acid, which, when combined with salt, acts as a natural cleaning agent. This combination effectively dissolves rust, allowing dirt to be easily removed from the metal surface. Using a potato to clean baking trays and other metal cookware is an eco-friendly solution and a straightforward way to extend their lifespan. Scourers can often damage protective coatings on baking trays, leading to corrosion over time. The potato acts gently yet effectively. Cleaning rust with potato is a method known for years. It was used by our grandmothers, who managed everyday dirt naturally without the need for harsh chemical agents.

How to clean baking trays with a potato?

Preparing for this cleaning method is simple. All you need is a potato, salt, and a bit of patience. Cut the potato in half and generously sprinkle one side with salt. Then, rub it onto the rusty areas of the tray using circular motions. The potato's acid, combined with the salt, will begin to dissolve the rust, making the surface increasingly clean.

What will we need?

  • 1 large potato
  • Salt
  • A baking tray to clean

The potato is a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to remove rust and dirt from baking trays and other metal cookware. Thanks to this method, we can avoid using scourers that may damage the surfaces of our cookware and refrain from using chemical cleaning agents, which are often harmful to our health and the environment. The potato works gently yet surprisingly effectively, leaving surfaces shiny and clean.

  1. First, cut the potato in half and sprinkle the cut part with salt, then start rubbing the rusty baking tray.
  2. The potato combined with salt should effectively remove rust. If the potato becomes worn, cut off a thin layer and repeat the process.

After cleaning the tray, rinse it with water and dry it thoroughly to prevent rust from reappearing.
