The assassination took place in the capital, Kabul. The news of the minister's death was confirmed by a government source, quoted by the Polish Press Agency. Haqqani died on the spot.
The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, quoted by Reuters, indicated that the Islamic State is responsible for the attack.
Chalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was one of the key politicians in the Taliban government that assumed power in Afghanistan in 2021. He belonged to the influential Haqqani clan, known for its connections to Al-Qaeda and accused of numerous bombings in Afghanistan.
Sanctions were imposed on Chalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani by the US authorities. In the Taliban government, he held the role responsible for assisting internally displaced refugees and the repatriation of Afghans abroad. He was also related to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the current Minister of Interior of Afghanistan.
The assassination in Kabul is another act of violence in a region that has struggled with instability and terrorist attacks for years. Haqqani's death is a significant blow to the Taliban government, which is trying to maintain control over the country.
