Sweden boosts arsenal: New CV90s for national and Ukrainian defence
The Swedish government has signed a contract with BAE Systems Hägglunds, under which it will acquire more CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. Some will replace units donated to Ukraine, while others will be sent as part of subsequent aid shipments. Here, we present the capabilities and equipment of these infantry fighting vehicles.

The disclosed information indicates this contract concerns the CV9035 MkIIIC version along with accompanying logistical support. In the Swedish army, the new CV9035 MkIIIC will replace the CV9040 vehicles sent to Ukraine. The number of CV9035 MkIIIC units covered by the signed contract has not been disclosed.
More CV90s for Sweden and Ukraine
Representatives of BAE Systems Hägglunds add that in the ordered configuration, one can expect a new turret, providing the entire structure with even greater functionality. It is known that the main armament in the CV9035 MkIIIC will be a Bushmaster III 35 mm calibre cannon, and the vehicle's interior will offer the crew even higher comfort and safety levels.
"The new CV9035 MkIIIC will enhance the capabilities of both the Swedish and Ukrainian armies, providing crews with better situational awareness, increased mobility, and higher levels of protection and offence," said Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems.
This type of armament in this IFV will not be entirely new but will be for the Swedish army (and Ukraine). The CV9040 variants used so far have been equipped with a 40 mm calibre cannon.
Depending on its equipment, the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle weighs between 20,000 kg and up to 38,000 kg. This higher value is achieved with the use of additional armour, resulting in a very high level of protection. This is further enhanced by the concurrent use of the LEDS-150 active defence system, designed to neutralise incoming anti-tank missiles fired by the enemy.
The Swedish design has an excellent reputation, and according to Ukrainian soldiers, it's even the best infantry fighting vehicle they have received as Western support. In interviews, they repeatedly emphasised that they highly value the significant durability of the CV90.
Despite its above-average armour and significant weight, the CV90 vehicles do not have mobility issues. They are equipped with track propulsion and an engine with 1000 hp, reaching a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
