One of the Russian military commanders presented a list of challenges facing the Russian army. In his opinion, the main problem is specialized Ukrainian drone units.

The Russian military points to the arms race between Ukraine and the West supporting it, and Russia. In his opinion, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are gaining an advantage thanks to the skillful use of modern drones. "Ukrainian troops have a large numerical advantage in first person view (FPV) drones and FPV drone operators," notes ISW.

The Ukrainian military has specialized and centralized drone units. This "allows Ukrainian forces to better integrate reconnaissance and attack drone capabilities into basic tactical manoeuvres."

The Russian commentator noted, among other things, that the Ukrainian forces have an advantage in the number of FPV-type drones and their operators. The milblogger claimed that Ukrainian assault groups have a 3-4:1 FPV drone advantage over Russian assault units, while Ukrainian mechanized groups have a 6-10:1 FPV drone advantage over comparable Russian units," reads the ISW report.

He stated that thanks to these units, Ukrainians are actively destroying unsecured Russian armoured vehicles, which complicates offensive operations—especially in the region of Avdiivka in the Donetsk oblast.

He emphasized that the deliveries of drones and the necessary electronic warfare systems for the Russian forces are carried out on a volunteer basis—that is, without a centralized supply mechanism—which affects the military's much worse combat capability.

"As Ukrainian forces adapt and better integrate new technologies into their force, Russian forces will likely feel pressured to do the same in order to retain technological and tactical parity on the battlefield. This offence-defens," summarizes The Institute for the Study of War.
