South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Tuesday in a televised address the implementation of martial law throughout the country. He accuses the opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathising with North Korea, and paralysing the government through anti-state actions, writes the AP agency.
He stated that this decision is "critical for defending the country's constitutional order".
Martial law in South Korea: the president did not reveal the details
- I announce martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the vile pro-North Korean anti-state forces that entangle the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order - Yoon Suk Yeol declared during the address.
Reuters notes that Yoon Suk Yeol did not explain what steps will be taken following the martial law declaration.
