Socotra is the largest island in the Yemeni archipelago, and it is of the same name. It finds its place in the Indian Ocean, roughly 240 kilometers away from the Somali cape Gees Gwardafuy and 380 kilometers from the Arabian Peninsula.

Geographically, despite its ownership by Yemen, Socotra is often considered part of Africa, a continent from which it most likely drifted away millions of years ago. Its isolated location has crafted a landscape unique to Socotra, hosting numerous endemic species of flora and fauna found nowhere else.

The untouched landscape draws explorers

Despite its small size, Socotra boasts incredibly diverse landscapes, featuring the pristine beaches of Archer, Delisha, Shoab, and Qalansiyah, unique cave systems like Hoq and Dogub, the Homhil Reserve mountain plateau, and the Diksam plateau, which is home to the island's singular forest of the unusual dragon's blood trees.

Moreover, Socotra is adorned with fabulous lagoons, lakes, canyons, and spectacular dunes. However, when planning a visit, one should not expect luxury, as the island lacks extensive hotel facilities, and most accommodations are in tents on the beach or among the dunes.

This adventurous style of travel is becoming increasingly appealing to tourists, who are eager to tread on unexplored and unconventional routes.

Socotra is renowned for its unique plant species

Among its botanical wonders, Socotra hosts dragon trees, cucumber trees, frankincense trees, and desert roses. These are not characters from a storybook but real, endemic species exclusive to Socotra.

The Dracaena cinnabar, or dragon's blood tree, is an iconic element of Socotra's landscape. It is renowned for its umbrella-like canopy and is named after the red resin it secretes, colloquially known as "dragon's blood." The cucumber or bottle trees are equally famous, whose trunks may resemble baobabs but are more closely related to the squash.

The island also features frankincense trees, the resin of which has made Socotra famous worldwide due to its aromatic scent and healing properties.

An island untouched by mass tourism

Without a doubt, Socotra is among the most enigmatic places on Earth. Its unparalleled biodiversity earned it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List 2008. Remarkably, only a few thousand tourists manage to visit Socotra each year. One key reason for its resistance to mass tourism is the necessity of joining organized tours to explore the island. In Poland, several agencies, including Prestige Tours, Tuk Tuk Tours, and Torre, offer such trips.

– The interest in Socotra trips has markedly grown recently – shares Anna from the Torre office, which specializes in arranging visits to obscure and hard-to-reach locations.

This season, several Polish groups will journey to Socotra, drawn by its reputation as "the most mysterious island in the world" or "an island from another planet." – The appeal of Socotra undoubtedly lies in its breathtaking landscapes, endemic wildlife and the tranquility it offers – Anna explains, noting that the prolonged conflict in Yemen sidelined Socotra from tourist interests, even though it was never a battleground. The situation has evolved significantly, and Socotra captivates more and more individuals, particularly those searching for unique, barely-touched destinations.
