Silverfish are small insects known for their ability to move swiftly. They typically measure between 1 and 2.5 centimetres in length. They are distinct due to their long, thread-like antennae and silvery, shiny abdomens, which is why they are occasionally referred to as silverfish. Originally from tropical regions, these insects have developed a fondness for the hot, humid bathrooms often found in places like Poland. While generally harmless, their presence in a home is not particularly pleasant.

Where do silverfish appear? They often hide in these places

Though it is generally believed that silverfish are most frequently found in the bathroom, these cunning creatures also inhabit other parts of the home. They feed on materials rich in starch, organic glue, paper scraps, and sugar, which means they can also be found in the kitchen. They frequently hide behind the refrigerator or in cabinets under the sink. Food remnants and even a small amount of moisture can attract them.

Silverfish are also often seen in utility rooms and laundries. If there is high humidity, you will likely find them in the corners, especially if proper ventilation is neglected. These insects prefer to hide in crevices, nooks, as well as under furniture, carpets, wallpapers, and skirting boards. How can you eliminate them? Several proven methods exist.

What effectively drives silverfish out of the house? You probably have this in your kitchen

Like most insects, silverfish are very sensitive to scents. Some scents attract them, while others repel them. To banish these unwelcome guests, wash the entire bathroom with water and white vinegar. Silverfish cannot tolerate this aroma; as soon as they detect it, they quickly retreat. Vinegar also disinfects and polishes surfaces.

Alternatively, you might try using essential oils such as lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus. Spraying these oils around areas where silverfish tend to nest can effectively repel them and keep them at bay for an extended period.

Ensure regular ventilation of rooms—fresh air helps reduce humidity, which is vital for deterring these pesky bugs. Sprinkling baking soda and rice in moist areas (e.g., overnight) can help absorb excess moisture, accelerating the silverfish's departure. Air dehumidifiers can also prove beneficial.

Maintaining cleanliness is also crucial. Regularly disposing of rubbish and avoiding leaving food residues on counters or floors will make it difficult for silverfish to find sustenance, prompting them to vacate your home more quickly.

If natural methods prove ineffective, consider using chemical agents available at hardware or gardening stores. However, exercise caution and follow the manufacturer's instructions when using them.
