Shooting in Abkhazian parliament: Lawmaker killed amid crypto mining debate
A shooting occurred in the parliament of Abkhazia, a separatist region of Georgia under Russian control. One lawmaker has been killed, and another is seriously injured. The perpetrator, a fellow parliament member, fled the scene.
On Thursday, dramatic events unfolded in the Abkhazian parliament. During a dispute, lawmaker Adgur Charazija fatally shot one deputy and seriously wounded another. The perpetrator then fled the scene.
According to the Abkhazian Ministry of Health, the deceased victim is lawmaker Vakhtang Golandziya. The seriously injured Kan Kvarchia was taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.
The Echo of the Caucasus portal, a division of Radio Liberty, reported that the incident began with an argument between Charaziya and Kvarcziya. Golandziya attempted to intervene. Tragically, it ended fatally for him.
Charaziya was once detained: He shot a man
Adgur Charaziya is the former mayor of Sukhumi, the capital of the unrecognised republic. In 2020, he was detained on charges of deliberately causing grievous bodily harm and illegal possession of a weapon. At that time, he allegedly shot an employee of the Central Market Sukhumi administration, Almas Shakryl.
The shooting occurred during a debate on cryptocurrency mining. In response to the energy crisis in the region, the parliament was considering a bill to ban so-called bitcoin mining. This process is associated with large losses of energy and water, which is necessary for cooling computers.
