The woman was participating in a sea lion interaction experience at the time. The man who rescued the woman from the water told 9News Perth that the incident was a "freak accident." Two rescue teams were deployed to the location.
After the attack, the woman was transported to shore by a local company's charter boat and taken to Jurien Bay Health Centre. Following this, she was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital. Her condition was grave, and she underwent emergency surgery on Monday afternoon.
Sandland Island is about 300 meters from the shore and spans around 2 hectares. It's one of several islands visited by local tour operators who offer swimming experiences with sea lions.
Authorities have reported that beaches in the vicinity have been closed. The Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development is investigating the incident and advising the public to exercise extreme caution in the Jurien Bay region.
