Scottish study reveals milk as a top hydrating drink over water

It's getting hotter, and people are wondering what to drink on hot days. Some mistakenly claim that water is the best hydrating drink. Scientists from the Scottish University of St. Andrews have debunked this myth.

What affects adequate hydration? The composition of the drink is crucial. Experts have found that milk hydrates even better than plain water. This is because it contains lactose, some protein, and fat, which help slow stomach emptying and keep you hydrated for longer.

Milk also contains sodium, which acts like a sponge. It retains water in the body, resulting in less urine production.

Research conducted by scientists at St. Andrews University in Scotland has revealed that skimmed milk is the most hydrating drink.

These drinks hydrate best

Scottish researchers prepared a ranking that included skimmed milk, oral rehydration solutions, and whole milk.

The position of the water certainly draws attention. Still, water ranked tenth, while sparkling water came eleventh. This clearly shows that water does not hydrate very well. It loses to drinks like Coca-Cola, orange juice, or tea.

However, there are also drinks that hydrate worse than water. These include beer and coffee.
