The European Union has already imposed its 14th package of sanctions on organisations linked to Russia and the Russians themselves. This time, the Ahmad Kadyrov Foundation, headed by the wife of the former president of Chechnya and the mother of Ramzan, the current leader of the republic, Aimania, was not overlooked. The mentioned foundation implements re-education programmes for Ukrainian children and youth.
In August 2023, a ceremonial event occurred at the Kremlin, during which Russian President Vladimir Putin himself awarded the Order of Honour to Aimania Kadyrova. The Russian authorities generously reward the 70-year-old woman. She received the Order of Friendship for her contribution to strengthening peace and friendship among the peoples of the North Caucasus, the National Guard of Russia medal, the Ahmad Kadyrov Order, the "Mother's Glory" medal, a badge for merits "For Kindness," and the title of "Honoured Human Rights Defender of Chechnya."
Also, in August 2023, the US Department of the Treasury decided to impose sanctions related to the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. Aimania Kadyrova was among the punished individuals. It is worth mentioning that Ramzan Kadyrov is accused of committing numerous war crimes.
What do the sanctions for Kadyrov's mother involve?
The 14th package of sanctions included 69 individuals. Among them are entrepreneurs, propagandists, and persons responsible for the deportation of Ukrainian children.
The European Union imposes sanctions in response to human rights violations. They are directed at individuals and entities responsible for repression against civil society and the democratic opposition and for undermining democracy and the rule of law in Russia.
They include a travel ban for individuals, asset freezes for individuals and entities, and prohibiting providing them with funds and economic resources.
The sanctions list includes penal colonies, the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation, judges, prosecutors, justice system workers, and high-ranking officials in the penitentiary system and the Ministry of Justice.
The sanctions aim to weaken Russia's economic base and significantly limit its ability to wage war. They apply to, among others, Putin himself, Sergey Lavrov, and billionaire Roman Abramovich.
