Russia's Next-Gen TOS‑3 'Drakon' Flamethrower Promises Enhanced Battlefield Supremacy
The artillery system TOS-3 "Drakon" was patented by the Russian weapon factory Omsktransmash in February 2024. At that time, the new flamethrower was still in the conceptual phase. The development of TOS-3 "Drakon" then picked up pace, resulting in the creation of an experimental model, as reported by Defence Express. Bekkhan Ozdoev, Industrial Director of Rostec State Corporation, allegedly shared this update.

Ozdoev mentioned that the TOS-3 "Drakon" will be equipped with a tracked chassis and feature a new launcher, increasing its range of fire and supporting new ammunition types. However, he did not provide further details about the flamethrower. It is suggested to be an enhancement over the TOS-1 and TOS-2 systems, which the Russians have actively used in conflicts in Ukraine. Significant shortcomings were reportedly observed on the battlefield, compromising the weapon's effectiveness.
TOS-3 "Drakon" - The new Russian flamethrower
Ozdoev reiterated that the TOS-3 "Drakon" will use a tracked chassis and a new launcher, extending its reach and allowing for new types of ammunition. Detailed specifics about the weapon were not disclosed. However, it is known that TOS-1A "Solntsepyok" has a range of 6 to 10 kilometres, and TOS-2 "Tosochka" from 16 to 25 kilometres. This implies the TOS-3 "Drakon" range will exceed 25 kilometres, positioning the weapon further away from the frontline.
Earlier reports suggest that the TOS-3 is an advanced version of the TOS-1 and TOS-2 systems, frequently deployed by the Russians in Ukraine. Their use in combat has reportedly helped identify major inadequacies that hinder the weapon’s overall performance. Engineers were thus tasked with creating a new model that addresses these issues while maintaining the system’s powerful capabilities.
