The crew of the Coast Guard cutter on Monday noted a Russian "Vishnya-class vessel" approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Amukta Pass, the Coast Guard said. The crew of one of the helicopters also noted the object.

According to the statement, the ship was passing through international waters but "remained within the US exclusive economic zone," which extends up to 370 kilometres from the US coastline.

The American coast guard did not establish communication but followed the ship as it moved eastward.

It was noted that this was done to "ensure that there would be no disruptions to US interests at sea around Alaska," said Commander Steven Baldovsky.
