Russian air force woes: Su‑34 losses and F‑16 rivalry

According to analysts, Russian propagandists are deliberately commenting on the downing of the Su-34 by the F-16, inadvertently highlighting a significant issue within their air force. The aircraft, which play vital roles in the conflict in Ukraine, are systematically being shot down, with losses now numbering in the dozens.

American geopolitical analyst Irina Zuckerman, cited by "The National Interest", highlighted that while Russia's offensive in Ukraine persists, the recent incident marks another challenge for Russia, as Su-34 aircraft are typically deployed to target Ukrainian infrastructure.

Important aircraft of the Russian Air Force

The Su-34 (NATO code: Fullback) is a tactical bomber developed in the 1990s to replace the Su-24. The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated that it remains a cornerstone of the Russian air force. It measures over 23 metres in length and can reach speeds of up to 1,900 kilometres per hour. Additionally, it has a maximum range of approximately 4,000 kilometres and can carry weapons deemed significant by Russia, including guided aerial bombs, which are causing considerable difficulties for the Ukrainians.

During the conflict in Ukraine, more than 35 Su-34s have been destroyed. Analysts highlight that this accounts for nearly a quarter of the pre-war fleet of such aircraft in service with the Russian Federation. They also stress that Russian losses at the front outpace the production of new units.

Did the Su-34 fall victim to the F-16?

The most recent destruction of a Su-34 occurred in Ukraine on 12th October. One theory suggests it was downed by an F-16 fighter jet. Russian propagandists heavily promote this narrative, which analysts perceive as a calculated action. Although no concrete evidence has emerged to confirm the F-16's involvement in this incident, pro-Kremlin propagandists have seized the opportunity to fuel anti-Ukrainian and anti-American sentiments.

Zuckerman pointed out that the focus on the F-16 is significant, as pro-Kremlin propagandists are eager to seize any opportunity to criticize U.S. support for Ukraine. They view this as a chance to question American and Western aid, while depicting Ukraine as being controlled by intelligence agencies like the CIA and MI6, using Western equipment against Russia.
